Hello Friends!
In our one of previous posts we have learnt about the working of hard discs and today we will discuss about some terms associated with hard discs. These are:
IDE: (Integrated Drive Electronics) IDE is the standard for all the drives found in computer systems these days. EIDE i.e. Enhanced IDE is special type of attachment interface specification used for high performing, large capacity drives.
DMA: (Direct Memory Access)- This feature makes drives to directly access the data among each other and without disturbing the CPU. It increases the efficiency and speed of computers.
Almost all the disks support this feature these days.
ATA: (Advanced Technology Attachment) This is a standard interface for connecting storage media like hard drives, CD ROMs, DVDs etc and allows a short data cable. So it is used in internal solutions. SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment.
Cache: This is called buffer memory and is used to increase the speed of transfer of data between CPU and hard disc. It is fabricated on the hard drives IC and synchronizes data transfer. In general larger cache means more speed.
Head: Head is a mechanical assembly that is used to read and write data on and from the platters of hard disc. It is moved on the platters with the help of actuators, an arm like component.
S.M.A.R.T.: (Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology)- This facility is used to report the device status to the computer machine. A hard disc using this facility constantly checks for the errors which may occur in the disc itself and reports, so that it can be repaired or healed.
In the next post we will discuss some more terms about hard discs. Enjoy reading. Comments are heartly welcome.
