You have purchased the new hard disc. Now we will discuss about the main things we should care about to efficiently use our hard disc. As the internal hard drives are fragile and need more care these should not be repeatedly attached and detached from the system or CPU case. Extra care should be taken while transporting your hard drive. Always keep the hard drive tightly screwed in correct position. Proper ventilation is another requirement as it also dissipates heat. Always use good quality and proper cables that are recommended by the manufacturer, otherwise data transfer speed may be effected.
Use utilities available in Windows for the proper maintenance of your hard disc. These includes routine:
1. Disc checking: (chkdsk utility) which checks and repairs the most commonly errors in your hard disc. It may be scheduled by you for the next boot time or may run automatically when the system is not properly shut down. It is recommended not to interrupt the disc checking utility program as it saves the disc from many severe problems and improves its efficiency and speed.
2. Defragmentation: After some time of hard disc installation and use its speed is slowed down due to the fact that some data is spread at its surface randomly and access time for data is increased resulting slow down of over all working of the computer system. The way to improve the situation is defragmentation. In this process the data is arranged in sytematic manner. The process takes some long time, so it can be done only in spare time. This utility should be run occasionely.
3. Scan for viruses: As we all know the viruses are destructive programs that may harm our data/software and hardware both, so it is recommended to use a good and latest anti-virus that may detect all the dangerous viruses and clean our hard disc. The viruses may also damage boot sector of our hard disc and we will not be able to even boot our computer machine. So always be protected from virus attacks on the computer. Use an anti-virus that is light on system resources and your pocket both. As some anti virus programs themselves may slow down our computer as they eat up much computer resources. I personally recommend the

Lots of people dont know what drive utilities are and what fragmentation is. Some people dont defrag for years and wonder why the sytem is not performing to its best speed.
