Power of Mnemonics-II

Welcome back friends!

In my last post I discussed a powerful mind technique to learn and remember difficult words/ spellings. This technique i.e using mnemonics can further be used even in the field of mathematics. See here:
Calculating trigonometric function
This example is only for those students who need to remember the formulas to calculate sin, cos, tan, which are trigonometric functions.

Tail Owls Are Scared Of Huge Crocodiles And Hippos
Consider the first three words: Tail Owls Are. Here the first letters of each word {T,O,A} in order gives this formula:
Tan = Opposite/Adjacent

Similarly the remaining six words give the following two formulas:

Sin = opposite/hypotenuse
Cos = adjacent/hypotenuse
Also a two other lines can be used for this relationship in trigonometry:
Pandit Badri Parsad
--------- -------- ----------
Har Har Bolo
You can easily relate first word of these ratios to trigonometrical ratios e.g.
Sin = P/H, Cosec= H/P, Cos= B/H, Sec=H/B, Tan=P/B, Cot=B/P
Mathematics students are well conversed that P stands here for Prependicular, B for base, and H for hypotenuse of a right angle triangle.
Also sign in various coordinates can also be remembered with a simple sentece;
After School To College.
Here A means All i.e. in the first coordinate all ratios are positive.
S means Sine i.e in the second coordinate Sine and its reciprocal cosecant are positive and rest are negative.
Similar is the case with Tangent and Cosine in third and fourth coordinates.
Remembering the value of “pi”
The value of PI to 5 decimal places is 3.14159. consider the following sentence to remember this value:
How I Wish I Could Calculate.
{3} {1} {4} {1} {4} {9}

Notice that a number is given below each word in the above sentence. This number is the number of letters in that word. For example the first word “How” has 3 letters {H,o,w}.
The second has 1. The third has 4 and so on.

Put all these numbers and you get the value of pi = 3.14159

Remembering the square root of 2 to 10 decimal places
Like the above example, the value of square root of 2 is given by the following sentence.
I have a root of a two whose square is two.
The first word “I” has just 1 letter. The second word “have” has 4 letters and so on. So the value of the square root of two is =1.4142135623
The Number-Rhyme Technique for Remembering up to ten items
To remember up to ten items this technique is usually the best. In this technique, you use a word that rhymes with the numbers from one to ten. It means that the words you use should sound similar to the sound of “1”, “2”, “3”, etc. In the list below, notice that “1”is the bun. These two words end in similar sounds.
1 bun
2 shoe
3 tree
4 door
5 hive {bee hive}
6 sticks
7 heaven
8 gate
9 vine
10 pen
in this technique, you memorize these ten rhyming words. It is relatively easy to remember this list because the chosen words end in sound similar to the sound of words
“1”, “2”, “3”, etc.
you can then use the same list of rhyming words to memorize different lists.

Power of Mnemonics

In our day to day life we face problems in learning and remembering difficult words, long phrases, spellings, names etc. for examination purpose or in office or in our daily routine life. Today I will discuss a Memory Technique that is much helpful to remember long sequences, spellings, and other difficult and complicated things. This technique is use of Mnemonics. This technique can make remembering lists or names almost automatic. And it takes only some effort and some practice in using these techniques.

Use this to develop your memory, and see big difference in your abilities and achieve success in exams and in life.

So, you must practice this technique. Use it when the teacher is teaching in the class. Use it when you are at home. Use it to remember names of all players in any game. Use it for any list of names. Use it for any mathematical formula or use it anywhere it will be always effective. By recent research, it has become known that the brain Works most efficiently when you combine the left brain and the right brain for mental activity. The traditional techniques like repeating a list many, many times use only the left brain where as this technique helps to use both left and right brain. So what it is:

Mnemonics
Mnemonics use associations to remember some specific things. They associate what you want to remember with something that is easier to remember.
For example, you can take the first letter of each thing or name and make an interesting word or sentence. Here are some example.

The seven colors of a rainbow
Take the first letter of each of the seven colors in the rainbow and arrange them as VIBGYOR. Now you need to remember only this word “VIBGYOR” and you can easily recall the seven colors as;

V- violet
I - indigo
B - blue
G - green
Y - yellow
O – orange
R – red

Planets of the solar system
We can remember the names of all the planets in the solar system by remembering the following sentence.
Men Very Easily Make Jugs Serve Useful Night Purposes.

Here the first letter of each word in the sentence represented the first letter of the planet. In addition notice that the first word “Men” represents Mercury and it is the closest to the sun. the second is “Venus” remembered by the word “very” in the above sentence.

M –MERCURY
V – VENUS
E - EARTH
M - MARS
J - JUPITER
S - SATURN
U - URANUS
N - NEPTUNE
P - PLUTO

Here is another sentence that you can use to remember just the 9 planets in increasing order of increasing size.

Men Plan Many VENUS Jumps.

As in the above example, the first letter of each word represents a planet, except the word “VENUS” for which each letter represent a planet.

M – MERCURY
P – PLUTO
M - MARS
V - VENUS
E - EARTH
N - NEPTUNE
U - URANUS
S - SATURN
J - JUPITER

So you see how powerful this technique may be for remembering difficult words, long lists and sentences. This technique can be employed anywhere you want. In my next article we will discuss how we can use it to learn Trigonometric ratios. So keep reading.

Some Cheers

This Friday was some special for me for the following reasons.
1. It was my son's 17th birthday.
2. It was end of a tiresome working week.
3. Third and most important was a little moment when my instructor in my classroom was delivering our tests back after evaluation. It was our Radio Theory class of my promotional course. My test was the last amongst 22 trainees from all over India and after about 4 years I heard sound of clapping for me as I have secured 9 marks out of 10, and was praised by my learned tutor/trainer.
I realized the fruit of hardwork with concentration. Although it was not a very big success, but it was valuable and encouraging. I have felt the same happiness in Dec. 2004 when I won Gold Medal in All India Police Duty Meet in Computers amongst participants of Police Officers of all the States Police and Paramilitary forces.
