How to use hard disc efficiently?

Hello friends!

Welcome back. So untill now we have learned to buy and install new hard disc. Now is the time to learn how we can efficiently use the hard disc. We all know hard disc is the place where data of all types is stored, but only a few know how to store it efficiently. Here are some tips that we may use for the purpose.
1. Make portions on the hard disc. Rename these portions if you wish. By default these will be c, d, e .......
2. Allocate space for these portions efficiently such as about 7 GB for Windows XP, 3 GB for program files, 3 GB for My documents and so on..
3. Install Windows XP on C: drive.
3. Store your documents and other data on the secondary portions. It should not be on the portion on which Operating system (Windows XP) is loaded.
4. Name the folders according to data stored in them.
5. Name your files according to their contents, time and date of their creation so that you can easily recognize them when you later need.
6. Make separate folders for separate types of files like document files should be in separate folders, pictures should be in another and so on..
7. Do not install games and other heavy graphics programs on the portion on which Windows is installed otherwise speed and working of your computer will severely effected.
8. Defrag your hard disc after some time of its usage.
9. We should preferably use NTFS file system as data is less fragmented by using it, but it will not work for Windows 98 operating system.

Let us buy a Hard Disc

Hello friends. Good day.
Today we will discuss what should we check while buying a new hard disc. We may need to upgrade our hard disc if the older one is much slow or with many bad sectors on it. We have to buy new one if the older one is short of storing capacity. The performance of our computer much depends upon the hard disc. The operating system also resides on the hard disc. Our computer may refuse to boot if the hard disc is defective. So what should we check while buying the new one. These are the main things we should consider.
1. Model: Check and compare the features and price of available models with the dealer. Ask for the newer model.
2. Capacity: Decide the capacity of hard disc you need. If you are not sure the larger capacity is always better. You will not need to upgrade it in near future. The hard discs are available upto 500 GBs.
3. SATA/PATA: Serial ATA are better and faster than Parallel ATA. If your motherboard supports SATA select it. RPM factor is also vital. The rpm should be at least 7200.
4. Budget: Also compare the prices of available models of the hard disc. How much you intend to spend?
5. Check: After selecting the model, check the hard disc on the computer machine of dealer. It may have bad sectors on it. Your drive should be unpartitioned.
6. Warranty: Ask the dealer about the warranty type. Also ask how many days he will take to replace the hard disc if needed. Remember guaranttee and warrantee are different things.

Some more terms about hard discs

Welcome back friends! I hope you will be enjoying the posts. Today we will discuss some more terms relating to hard discs.
SATA: (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) Like IDE cable it is also used to connect hard discs and CD/DVD Drives to the port on the motherboard. It is serially communicating interface that means data travel on it in the serial mode i.e one after another. works faster than the conventional parallel cables and is also longer than the IDE cables but less in width. It may be up to 1.5 meters long. A SATA cable may support speed of 150 to 300MBps (Mega Bytes per second).
SCSI: (Small Computer Sytem Interface) :It is an advanced version of IDE/ATA interfaces. It is used to optimize data flow and is system level bus with controllers on each SCSI device.
RPM: (Rotations per minute) The speed of the platters in the hard drive is measured in rpm. The platters are mounted on a spindle. Faster the spped better the hard drive as it effects over all speed of a computer. Most common speed of the hard drives these days is 7200 rpm where as for a laptop it is 4200 rpm.
Platters:These are the flat round discs usually made of very thin soft plastic and coated with magnetic material. These are used to actually write/record and read the data with the help of magnetic heads just like the tape recorders earlier used to record and play the songs and music.

Know your Hardware! (Hard Disk)

Hello Friends!
Sorry for the infrequent posts. I am busy in my training upto 19th of Sept. So I am getting less time to be with you. Let us be ahead about our Computer Hardware. Today we will discuss about Hard Disc. A Disc is some thing circular like Compact Disk. Why it is called hard disc. As it is an assembly of some magnetic delicate discs, encapsulated in a hard metal box. It is permanently fitted in the CPU box. This is a mechanical part of our CPU and the discs inside it are rotated by a spindle. It is a storage/memory device. Here we can store a large amount of our data, that can be retrieved as and when required by the processor. Magnetic heads are used to write and retrieve/read data from it by Processor.
The capacity of hard disk is measured in Giga Bytes (GB). Most common available hard disks are of 80/160 GB, these days. In the earlier days hard disks with much less capacities were used. Even in 1990s a hard disk with capacity of less than 1 GB was used. And these days after about a decade, we are using upto 500 GB hard disks even in our desktops. How ever as much capacity is not needed by an average user. For a home user 80 GB hard disk is more than enough. People like animators, graphic designers and gamers require high capacity hard disks.
The hard disk falls under the Secondary memory type, where a large amount of data is needed. Our operating system also resides on the hard disk. It is less speedy than primary memory which is faster and costlier. In our next post we will discuss more features of hard disks. Happy reading till then.
